Table of Contents
It is not easy to introduce all aspects of Segment LCD, so we have prepared a lot of information on this page for you to delve into. To make sure you can find the information you want quickly, we have prepared this content directory that will jump to the corresponding location when you click on it.
The Applications about Segment LCD
Graphic LCD can be used on industrial and consumer’s applications including entrance guard’s equipment, telegram, medical device, car and home audio, white goods, game machine, toys and etc.
How to Design a Segment LCD
To design a segment lcd, you need to consider several factors, such as:
Size and Unusual icon
Determine the required size of the display based on the application and available space. Consider the amount of information that needs to be displayed and the viewing distance. A larger display may be needed if the information is complex or if it needs to be viewed from a greater distance.
Whether round or polygonal displays. Lcdeer offers the technical support to make your unique ideas a reality.
LCD panel and Viewing angle
Segment LCD can have different LCD panel, such as TN LCD: White on black or Black on white. HTN LCD: Black on white or White on Blue. STN LCD: Black on Yellow-Green or White on Blue. FSTN LCD: Black on White. VA LCD: White on Black. You should choose a type that matches your project’s aesthetics and functionality.
Consider the viewing angle required for the application, and choose a display with a suitable polarizer or other technology to ensure optimal viewing. Such as 6:00, 12:00, 3:00 and 9:00 o’clock. Some segment LCDs are designed with wide viewing angles to make the display easier to read from different positions.
- TN LCD: Inexpensive. Viewing angle width approx. 50°.
- HTN LCD：Inexpensive. Viewing angle width approx. 60°.
- STN LCD: Higher prices. Viewing angle width approx. 120°.
- FSTN LCD: Higher prices. Viewing angle width approx. 150°.
- VA LCD: Higher prices. Viewing angle width approx. 100°.
Interface and Voltage
Graphic LCD can have different interfaces and voltages, such as parallel, I2C, SPI, RS232, 5V, 3.3V, etc. The interface and voltage determine how you connect and control the display with your microcontroller. You should choose an interface and voltage that is compatible with your microcontroller and easy to use.
Polarizer have three types, transmissive, transflective and reflective.
Transmissive providing a clear and bright image, but it require a backlight to function properly.
Reflective providing a clear image with minimal power consumption. However, they can be difficult to read in low light conditions.
Transflective combine the features of transmissive and reflective by reflecting ambient light and providing a clear and readable image in a wide range of lighting conditions.
Pin connectors: Pin connectors use pins to connect the LCD to a PCB. They are a popular choice for applications that require a more robust connection.
Zebra connectors: These connectors use conductive polymer pads to connect the LCD to a PCB. They are flexible, making them ideal for applications where the display may need to bend or flex.
FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) connectors are commonly used for connecting segment LCD displays to a circuit board. They are preferred over traditional pin connectors because they offer greater flexibility in design and allow for smaller, thinner devices.
Multi-color printing and Backlight
Segment LCDs can be printed in multiple colors, which can be useful for creating more visually appealing displays or highlighting specific areas of the display. However, it’s important to keep in mind that multi-color printing can add cost to the manufacturing process, so it’s important to weigh the benefits against the added expense.
The backlight is an important component of the display, as it determines the brightness and visibility of the information. Consider the type of backlight (such as LED or EL) and the brightness level required for the application.
If the LCD will be used in an outdoor setting with high temperatures and direct sunlight, it’s important to choose a display with high brightness and a wide temperature range to ensure reliable operation.
Consider any environmental factors that may impact the display, such as exposure to moisture, dust, or other contaminants, and choose a display that is resistant to these conditions. Some segment LCDs are designed to be more resistant to environmental factors, making them suitable for use in rugged or outdoor environments.
Lcdeer offers suitable solution for you to display the best in any environment.
